Soaking up summer

In our efforts to squeeze in as much fun as we can during the last few weeks of summer, we ventured out and about to some new places this past week!

Nico and I had a movie date last week and saw "The Secret Life of Pets" up in Bee Cave. I could tell that he was excited that I was going with him, since it's a rare occurrence to do things as just us. I had an unexpected surprise when he scooted over to sit on my lap for the entire show. Afterward, he played a few arcade games, and we split a slice of pizza and some frozen yogurt. It was such nice one on one time to reconnect with him.

On Monday, we took a trip over to Emma Long Metro Park to hang out by the water! The drive there featured the best views of Austin that I've seen yet. I felt like we were on vacation! There was a nice swimming area for Nico along the river with shade trees and benches for the rest of us to sit and relax. He had a blast catching minnows and jumping off the dock. This outing of ours ranks as one of my favorite things that we have done this summer!

Natalie and I went to the car a couple times to get some AC and have milk breaks. She was so alert and seemed to like looking out toward the water. She dipped her toes in briefly and otherwise stayed in the shade.

We ate lunch at a nearby restaurant called Ski Shores Cafe, and we agreed that we hit the jackpot with discovering this place. Not only does it sit right on the water with a shaded, beautiful view, but there is a fenced in playground and arcade. Perfection.

The swans and turtles had Nico's attention for a while, and he threw them some chips.

There was a nice breeze out here today, and I about fell asleep sitting here too. Aaaaahh...

On Wednesday, since we haven't been doing enough exciting things, I had another surprise up my sleeve just for Nico and I. I read about this place online, Mt, Playmore, and knew we had to try it. It boasts the largest indoor playground in Texas along with a giant arcade that must have had 100+ games. We were there for about three and a half hours until Nico ran out of gas. I didn't tell him where we were going, and when we walked in, he gave me the hardest hug, did some goofy dance moves, and yelled, "this place is AWESOME!"

This picture doesn't do the size of this playground justice. It was a full 360 degrees around. He made friends quickly and joined a game of tag.

He eventually needed a little break from the constant running and jumping around, so we played in the arcade for about an hour. He worked his way through most of the games in there. His favorites were the motorcycle/car racing ones, rollercoaster riding, and bowling.

We split pizza and chicken tenders for lunch, and it was a struggle getting him to agree to sit still and eat! I bribed him by telling him about the next surprise of our day - a reptile show. There were snakes (5 of them - gross!!), turtles, and lizards shown, and afterwards, you had an opportunity to touch them. He was so eager to see this and made a point to claim his seat upfront ahead of time.

He touched this 7 ft long snake a handful of times and enjoyed the disturbing faces that I would make! Just gives me the chills writing this!

A few other highlights from this week include pool time and a morning walk with just me and the kids, making smores, and dinner with hockey friends at Lucy's on the Lake!

I don't even like friend chicken, but this stuff was awesome. Lucy's has a great view of the lake and plenty of space for kids to run around too. It was a gloomy, rainy day so we basically had one of the outdoor patio spots to ourselves! Nico thought he was cool being allowed to run around in the rain.
