With plenty of attention on our newest bundle of joy these days, I knew that I wanted to make a point to make Nico's birthday extra special. I present to you, not just his birthday, but his birthday week! Just a little bit of extra fun each day based on his requests.
Monday: Family walk around Circle C Metro Park. Nico rode his bike along the trail and Natalie snoozed away.
Tuesday: Donuts and Bowling. I had been wanting to try the popular, whimsical downtown donut shop that is Voo Doo Doughnuts, and this was a good opportunity! Nico and I had a breakfast date while David drove Natalie around in circles due to a lack of good parking. Gotta love downtown. He doesn't get excited like us about sweets anyways.
We talked about where he wants to have his birthday party with friends, and bowling won out. We stopped by in person to discuss a reservation and check out the place, which turned into a couple rounds of bowling for ourselves.
Wednesday: Dinner with my parents/"grandma and grandpa." We can't let the excitement of Nico's birthday overshadow the fact that today was my dad's birthday too! (When Natalie was born just a few hours short of Father's Day, he joked that all of the days unique to him are going to be stolen by us. "What's next, my Christmas gifts?!" Ha.)
We actually had to pick up my parents at the airport, because they just spent their first few weeks at their lake house in Michigan! It's cool to see them live out this dream that I remember them talking about many years ago. In typical fashion, Mexican food was requested! We went to Chuy's.
When pretending to sign the check, we also had Nico practice his letters. Not too shabby!
Happy birthday, dad/grandpa! We love you. We knew cake would be coming tomorrow, so we chose one of his other favorite desserts instead.
Thursday: Nico's actual birthday! I don't feel old enough to have a 5 year old!
We started the day with streamers hanging from the doors and stairs like I have done in previous years. Nico came into our room and told me that he felt special and very loved. Aww. We went to McDonalds for breakfast and he played on the playground for an hour. The daytime was pretty low key with hanging out around the house and going to the pool with daddy (which happens nearly every day anyways). Nico requested pizza for dinner tonight, so we tried out a restaurant that we haven't been to yet, Austin Pizza, followed by cake/ice cream and presents back at my parents' house! Nico then had a sleepover with them.
Captain America cake, per Nico's request, courtesy of my mom's baking and my dad's decorating!
You can have cake next year, Natalie!...
What does a 5 year old boy get excited about for his bday? Superhero and Darth Vader figures and a remote control monster truck from my parents, and a couple superhero lego sets and under armour clothes from papa and grandma! (Thanks to all 3 of my grandparents and Aunt Nancy and family for spoiling our boy as always too!)
Friday: Top Golfin' with the fam. Another Nico pick. We went at 10ish to beat the heat mainly for little sister's sake. Natalie has been such a trooper with all of her outings this week by the way. Our golf abilities bored her, and she slept most of the time. Nico mostly enjoyed trying to nail the cart that would intermittently drive by cleaning up the balls.
Attempted photo, take 1 with cranky pants who refused to be in the picture. The struggle is real.
Take 2.
The fun never stops, I tell ya. Happy birthday to my most favorite 5 year old.
