A sad loss

May 6th was supposed to be an exciting day for us. It was the 18th week of my pregnancy, and the long awaited gender reveal ultrasound was that afternoon! I remember the nervous butterflies throughout the day, obsessing about the semi-official verdict of boy vs. girl. We brought Nico with us to share in that moment too, hoping it would make it more real and understandable for him.

Unfortunately, we will always remember this day, and it's NOT for the reason that we want to. This was a sad, sad day that we never saw coming.

Within seconds of the ultrasound technician placing the wand on my stomach, I knew something was wrong. It didn't look right. I was initially confused for the first couple seconds, because I couldn't tell what sort of view or angle that we were looking at. By the third and fourth seconds, I knew what the problem was. There was no movement, and particularly, no intermittent fluttering of a heartbeat. My heart dropped into my stomach with the most sickening, shocking feeling I have ever experienced.  :(

I looked up at the technician's face, and I could tell that in that moment, he officially realized this too. Then he told us the news. I didn't allow myself to look up at the screen any longer, even though that image had already been forever engraved in my mind.

We were in shock. A punch to the gut. So indescribable. We thought that after the 13 week ultrasound, we were in the clear. This outcome had literally never crossed my mind. There had been no signs or symptoms of any concern!?!

We talked with our doctor, and she said that the measurements indicated that this may have happened a couple weeks ago, and I would need surgery right away in order to avoid complications. There was no convincing needed. I wanted it out now. From that moment on, the next hour was a blur with meeting the surgeon, details of the next steps, and prepping for the procedure.

The following morning, we got to the hospital around 11. Within our hour wait, there was not much opportunity for optimism. Within seconds of finding a seat after signing in, we saw a couple leaving with their newborn baby. I was bitter. Then, we were called over to the billing area so that we could learn that it costs just as much to have all this done than to have a real baby. And finally, we were called into the pre-op room, to learn that there was more than just a small risk of complications and those included hysterectomy and becoming infertile. About this time, I began cramping and bleeding pretty bad through my gown and onto the bed. This morning sucked.

In some of those roughest moments, David showed me this picture of Nico that I had on my phone background to remind me what we DO have! And man, I couldn't help but smile everytime. David was so strong for me.

12:15 rolled around, and it was game time. Let's get this over with! My final words to Dr. Lockey were how badly I wanted to be able to have another child. I had to know that she knew that. I remember waking after surgery, and in my foggy state, I immediately asked if I would be able to. Her answer was a HUGE relief! She later told us that there was no observable explanation for what might have happened, which I consider to be not such a bad thing.

I had to stay overnight in the hospital due to some blood work being off. I initially was so disappointed by that unexpected news, but the night turned out to be one that I am very thankful for. (Lesson to be learned there...) In my emotional and rock bottom state, my perspective on life was forever changed. My faith in the big man upstairs was also renewed. I knew that I was going to be okay.

God had a sense of humor and gave me a night nurse with the same name as what we had chosen for a girl. I do not consider myself to be very religious, but I believe that that was a message from him. It was a sign of reassurance that everything was going to be alright and to just believe that he has a plan for our lives.

See, I had generally been getting too impatient and uptight for some time now, and I knew it. But after something like this happens to you, you can't help but acquire a new perspective and a grateful heart. As I write this a couple months after the fact, I can say that I am a better person. I am more patient and appreciate of all of the good around me, and I am especially as grateful as I can be for the healthy, little boy that we are so fortunate to know.

I am not sure that we could have handled this any better. (Well, maybe the alcohol consumption was higher than ideal!...) I am proud of David and I. We can't help but see this from a positive point of view that, as clichĂ© as it sounds, it happened for a reason. There had to have been something wrong with our baby, and we were saved from something that would have been more heartbreaking to handle down the road. We are truly thankful.

Here is a good image that we have, dated back to the 13 week ultrasound.

See you one day, little one.

Men at work!

I was sitting on the couch, doing absolutely nothing. When I turned my head, this is what I saw.

I had to capture this Sunday afternoon moment.

My husband is folding laundry, and my son is "vacuuming"...

How did I get this lucky?!

Roundrock Express Baseball

Nico LOVES baseball. (and this makes our hearts so very happy!)

We went with my parents to a Roundrock Express minor league game on Friday, and Nico had a blast. He actually paid attention to the game and was even commenting on some of the outside pitches. Ha!

Lately, he has been asking to go out in the backyard and hit nearly every single day. David swears that the kid is getting atleast 100 swings a day! He now refuses to hit off the tee and makes us pitch to him, but we MUST sit on the bucket to do so. So demanding!

A funny text message that I got one day from David...

Mommy and Nico park day

I came home from work today and decided to take Nico to Dick Nichols park, just a handful of miles down the street, where he could run around in the sand and play on the playground. I love watching him play outdoors and be so happy!

He is getting ready for the Florida sand next week!

After returning from the park, here is reason #467 why David is a keeper.

Since Nico takes mainly showers now, it's a special event now when he takes a bath. I only offer when I feel that I have the extra energy and patience to deal with potential splashing and craziness! Tonight, he was showing off some of his swimming skills like putting his head under water, blowing bubbles, and floating on his back. (Maybe the swimming lessons will eventually pay off?!) And he made sure some of these specially chosen cars had their carwash.

Mickey time before bed.

Blanket, check. Left thumb, check.

Just soaking in all this time that I can while he is still a little guy.

A relaxing weekend

David and Nico went up to Dallas for the weekend to watch his old baseball team play and see his parents, so I had a weekend of relaxing and pampering! After some shopping and a massage on Friday, my parents treated me to dinner on Saturday at a fancy downtown steakhouse, Perry's! I have to admit, my parents are pretty cool. (Never thought I would admit that in writing.)

Here's Nico focusing on some of the baseball game! He looks so grown up to me in this picture. It was nice that David went out of his way to go see his old team play. Those boys mean so much to him.

Easter weekend

Nico was SO excited when he woke up and realized that the Easter bunny had visited!

The bunny made a trail of eggs from outside the door of his room to the living room, where his basket and gifts were waiting.

The assembled racetrack...

We waited for Grandma and Grandpa to come over after his nap and we had an Easter egg hunt in the backyard. He was so patient with this and opened each egg right when he found it.

followed by some baseball ofcourse...

David's dinner was absolutely awesome (as if there was ever a doubt)! The menu consisted of prime rib, yorkshire pudding, cheesy potatoes, and green beans.

We went over to Derek's house on Sunday so the boys could do an Easter egg hunt together and dye some eggs!

This was, surprisingly, not as messy of an activity as one would have thought! They had a blast.

It was a great weekend hanging out with family and friends! I love introducing Nico to all of these holiday traditions!

The obligatory, annual bluebonnet pic

The bluebonnets are everywhere down here. Makes for pretty drives throughout the hill country and on the highways!

Sea World!

We had a BLAST at Sea World! Not sure who had more fun- us or Nico. We caught all 3 of their shows and saw every exhibit within about a 4 hour span. It was so cool to see Nico's eyes light up at some of these new animals that he hasn't ever seen in real life.

The sea lion and walrus show was so entertaining and cute...

The whales...

And dolphins...

Nico was pumped about the flamingos and ducks too. He got to feed the ducks, and it was difficult telling him we had to move on to the next thing!

There had to have been at least 200 penguins in this massive cage...

Nico's highlight may have been this bubble gun. A lot of kids had one, so we fell to peer pressure. He terrorized just about anyone that walked by. It was seriously funny.

Petting the dolphins...

And here's our little fam! Today was so fun.

Stick a fork in him, he's done! (Like the wide open mouth sleeping? He is definitely my child.)

Regan weekend!

My BFF Regan came in town to visit! Woo hoo!

For as much as Nico loves Regan, he loves playing with her dog, Bentley, even more! Here's the goofball pretending to be a dog.

Regan and I went to the Randy Rogers' Band concert on Friday. It was in the ideal location, just across the street from our neighborhood at Nutty Brown CafĂ©. It was even sold out at 4000 people. I was impressed! It was a great concert, and they played all the songs we knew and more.

On Saturday, Regan and I went to Shady Grove and Jack Allens for a few hours in the afternoon to relax, grab some snacks, and catch up on some much needed girls' time!

Later in the day, we went to Salt Lick BBQ with David and Nico for dinner. Can you say, food coma?!
